Paver Calculator
Plan a paver patio, walkway or driveway. Enter the area and paver size to get the number of pavers, the gravel base in cubic yards and tons, and the bedding sand.
- Patio area
- 100 sq ft
- Gravel base
- 1.23 cu yd (≈ 1.73 tons)
- Bedding sand
- 0.31 cu yd (8.3 cu ft)
How this calculator works
The number of pavers is the area divided by the area of one paver (length × width ÷ 144 to convert square inches to square feet), plus extra for cuts.
Pavers sit on a compacted gravel base, usually 4 inches for patios and 6–8 inches for driveways, topped with about 1 inch of bedding sand.
Base and sand volumes are the area multiplied by each depth, converted to cubic yards. Gravel weight assumes about 1.4 tons per cubic yard.
Example: a 10 × 10 ft patio with 4 × 8 in pavers
- Paver area: 4 × 8 ÷ 144 = 0.222 sq ft.
- Pavers: 100 ÷ 0.222 = 450, plus 5% = 473 pavers.
- Gravel base (4 in): 100 × 0.333 = 33.3 cu ft = 1.23 cu yd ≈ 1.73 tons.
- Bedding sand (1 in): 100 × 0.083 = 8.3 cu ft = 0.31 cu yd.
Quick reference
| Paver size | Pavers per 100 sq ft |
|---|---|
| 4 × 8 in | 450 |
| 6 × 6 in | 400 |
| 6 × 9 in | 267 |
| 12 × 12 in | 100 |
| 16 × 16 in | 57 |
Tips before you buy
- Herringbone and circular patterns need 10–15% extra because of the angled cuts.
- Compact the gravel base in 2 inch layers with a plate compactor for a patio that will not sink.
- Use polymeric sand in the joints to lock pavers in place and reduce weeds.
Frequently asked questions
How many pavers do I need for a 10 × 10 patio?
With standard 4 × 8 inch pavers you need 450 pavers for 100 square feet, or about 473 with 5% extra for cuts.
How much gravel do I need under pavers?
For a 4 inch base, multiply the area in square feet by 0.333 to get cubic feet, then divide by 27. A 10 × 10 ft patio needs about 1.23 cubic yards.
How deep should the sand be under pavers?
About 1 inch of coarse bedding sand over the compacted base. Thicker sand layers can shift and cause uneven pavers.
