How this calculator works
Concrete is sold by volume, so the calculator multiplies length × width × thickness after converting every measurement to feet. Thickness and depth are usually measured in inches, so they are divided by 12 first.
For round columns and post holes the volume is π × radius² × depth.
The result is divided by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards, the unit ready-mix suppliers use. Bag counts use standard yields: 0.60 cu ft for an 80 lb bag, 0.45 cu ft for 60 lb and 0.30 cu ft for 40 lb.
Example: a 10 × 10 ft patio, 4 inches thick
- Convert the thickness: 4 in ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft.
- Volume: 10 × 10 × 0.333 = 33.3 cu ft.
- Add 10% for waste: 33.3 × 1.10 = 36.7 cu ft.
- In cubic yards: 36.7 ÷ 27 = 1.36 cu yd.
- In 80 lb bags: 36.7 ÷ 0.60 = 61.1, so buy 62 bags.
Quick reference
| Thickness | Cubic feet | Cubic yards | 80 lb bags |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 in | 25.0 | 0.93 | 42 |
| 4 in | 33.3 | 1.23 | 56 |
| 5 in | 41.7 | 1.54 | 70 |
| 6 in | 50.0 | 1.85 | 84 |
Tips before you buy
- Above about 1 cubic yard, ordering ready-mix is usually cheaper and much faster than mixing 45+ bags by hand.
- Measure the depth of the excavated area in several spots and use the average. Ground is rarely perfectly flat.
- Ready-mix plants often have a minimum order or charge a short-load fee for small quantities, so ask before you book.

Frequently asked questions
How many bags of concrete do I need for a 10 × 10 slab?
A 10 × 10 ft slab that is 4 inches thick needs about 33.3 cubic feet of concrete. That is 56 bags of 80 lb premix, or 62 bags if you add 10% for waste.
How thick should a concrete slab be?
Patios, sidewalks and shed bases are usually 4 inches thick. Driveways that carry cars are typically 5 to 6 inches, and areas for heavy trucks may need more. Check your local building code.
How much does one cubic yard of concrete cover?
One cubic yard covers 81 square feet at 4 inches thick, 108 square feet at 3 inches, or 54 square feet at 6 inches.
How much waste should I add?
Most contractors add 5 to 10 percent to cover spillage, uneven subgrade and forms that bow slightly. Use the higher figure for small or irregular pours.
Should I use bags or ready-mix?
Bags are practical for post holes, small pads and repairs under about 1 cubic yard. For larger pours, a ready-mix truck delivers consistent concrete all at once, which matters for a strong, crack-free slab.
