How this calculator works

The area to tile (length × width) is divided by the area of one tile. Tile sizes are entered in inches, so the tile area is divided by 144 to convert it to square feet.

An extra percentage is added for tiles that are cut at the edges, broken or set aside for future repairs. The result is rounded up to whole tiles and whole boxes.

Grout joints are small enough to ignore for most tile sizes, so they are not subtracted.

Example: a 10 × 10 ft floor with 12 × 12 in tiles

  1. Floor area: 10 × 10 = 100 sq ft.
  2. Tile area: 12 × 12 ÷ 144 = 1 sq ft.
  3. Tiles: 100 ÷ 1 = 100 tiles.
  4. Add 10% for cuts: 110 tiles, or 11 boxes of 10.

Tips before you buy

  • Buy all your tile from the same production lot so the color matches.
  • Use 15% extra for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns or rooms with lots of corners.
  • Keep a few spare tiles after the job — discontinued tiles are hard to match later.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra tile should I buy?

Add 10% for straight layouts and 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns and for large-format tiles, which waste more at the edges.

How many 12 × 24 tiles do I need for 100 square feet?

Each 12 × 24 in tile covers 2 square feet, so 100 square feet needs 50 tiles, or 55 with 10% extra.

Do I need to account for grout lines?

Not usually. Grout joints of 1/16 to 1/4 inch reduce the number of tiles by a negligible amount, and the extra you add for cuts more than covers it.
