You do not need to climb on the roof. The house footprint plus the eave overhang, multiplied by the pitch factor, gives a reliable estimate of the roof surface.

Remember the extras

Starter strips, ridge caps, drip edge and flashing are sold separately from field shingles. Add 10% waste for simple gable roofs and 15% for hip roofs and valleys.
